Facebook Predicts Breakups

The things we can learn from Facebook…  Here’s a question: what rises twice a year, once in Easter and then two weeks before Christmas, has a mini-peak every Monday and then flattens out over the summer? After scraping 10,000 Facebook status updates that contained “broke up” or “breakup”, David McCandless and his Lee Byron discovered the peak moments when people reset their Relationship Statuses to “Single”.

Facebook Predicts Break-ups

  • Big peak right before Spring Break (“Spring Cleaning?”).
  • Most breakups are announced on (“blue”) Mondays.
  • People like to start the summer single.
  • Another peak right before the Winter holidays.
