Coming up: Facebook Webmail

Looks like the new layout isn’t the only big Facebook news today. According to Michael Arrington, Facebook is preparing to compete with webmail giants like Gmail, (Windows Live) Hotmail and Yahoo by completely rewriting its messaging feature. Makes sense, because when you think of it, it’s a superfluous step to receive an e-mail that you’ve received a message.

Contrary to Arrington, we do believe it could be a Gmail killer. Judging by the many minutes that 400 million people spend on the site every day, Facebook could easily become the base station for private e-mail correspondence as well.

While the engineers have a lot of work to do if they want to convert Gmail users who are spoiled with nice features, it won’t be too hard to lure in customers of the “older” and less advanced free e-mail services and have they create a fresh @facebook.com e-mail address.

If they take this next step right, Facebook will be on its way to complete Internet dominance.
